lads i hope some of you may be able to help, i have a fixed spool reel which i use for bass fishing or spinning, well its hasnt been used at all but thats what its for, its a Penn Captiva II CV 2 Spinning Reel. when the line lay isnt great on it, sort of stops short at the top and bottom, is there any way to adjust the spool to improve the line lay.

Most fixed spools only work well with a limited variety of line diameters. Stray outside of that and the line lay is compromised. Is the line diameter correct for the spool? Is the spool the correct one for the reel and not from the next model up?

Some reels have spools that have various location notches in their base. These can be used to fine tune the spool height on the spindle in relation to the bailarm roller and line diameter used. Some come with washers that can be placed or removed from the inner base of the spool to do the same fine tuning. Some people will hand wind on the first layers of line to profile the spool for the top useable layers. This used to be a regular thing to do before the introduction of the long tapered spools. Some of the shorter spools still need it.

You say the line appears to be stopping short at the top and bottom of the spool? That sounds like it's the wrong spool. What diameter of line are you using on it as thicker will / should cure it. The problem being it could be too thick for what you want to use.

PS - That's what you get for using a mangle! :finga:

If it was a christmas gift from your little daughter then that's fine. You accept and cherish it for ever and ever.

If it was a christmas gift from the wife - DIVORCE!!!!!!!!

Simply fixed martin, strip the braid to a multi. take some backing off and wind it back on by hand in the opposite profile to how it sits now, i.e. a wee bump at the top and bottom of the spool to compenste for the problem you are seeing. as sean said it's called profiling, worth a google. not much diff from laying line on a multi.

If it souns tricky im gonna be casting in the field midweek a few times over the next while if you wanna make a date you can bring it down and ill sort it and show you what to do, Flexi time stevie couls maybe make it and cordonated I think austin has some mid week time too. Mini meet in meters..?
